Industrial control systems based on the PC architecture.

In earlier years these have been successfully completed using a DOS based application. More recently due to more complex requirements systems have been implemented based upon a 32-bit real-time operating system. Control systems have included either 1/4 VGA or full size VGA touchscreen panels for user interface. Others have been completed using only a keypad for user data entry and a two-line LCD for display.

Some specific PC control systems are:

Pen nib slitter

Fully automated machine to cut slits in pen nibs to accurate tolerances. Software was written to run under DOS. User input was via a simple keypad and standard VGA monitor for display. Cutting profile can be user programmed to allow for changes in nib material etc. Control of a number of motors via a motion controller card.

Bench winder

Completely programmable coil winding system. Uses a custom script language to control the winding process and the auxiliary I/O. Motor control was achieved by writing pulses directly to an output port under full software control. This entailed a high-speed time-based interrupt to calculate motion profile and generate pulses. Software runs on a 233 MHz Pentium based system under a real-time operating system.
